Center For Biological Diversity: Make Oil Companies Responsible for Their Wells in California
California is sitting on a ticking time bomb: more than 30,000 idle oil and gas wells. Left inactive by fossil fuel companies, these wells are a serious hazard to clean air and water, people and wildlife, and even state finances. Cleaning up idle wells is a crucial part of protecting life on Earth. Unplugged wells can leak cancer-causing pollutants and explosive levels of climate-harming methane. In California thousands of idle wells sit dangerously close to schools, hospitals, and playgrounds, putting children and families at risk every day. A new bill in the California legislature would hold polluters responsible for their wells — making sure the burden of cleanup doesn’t fall on taxpayers.
