Climate Action Now: Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve News from Mexico

World Wildlife Fund Mexico recently reported that the overwintering population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) increased by a whopping 64% from winter 2024-2025 to winter 2025-2026, as illegal logging has been nearly eliminated in the Monarch Reserve. The areas of forest occupied by the migratory monarch swarms increased from 4.42 acres to 7.24 acres, reaching the highest coverage since 2018 (though far below the typical 20 acres in the 1990s).
