UCSC Arboretum: March is Hummingbird Month! March 1 - 31
As in years past, we’ve put together some fun and informative Bird Walks, Bird Talks and Bird Photography Tips & Tricks that all celebrate the tiny and mighty hummingbird! Don’t wait until March to check out the wonderfully acrobatic and colorful hummingbirds – they LOVE the Arboretum year round and the migrating Allens are already here in the gardens. Santa Cruz Interfaith Dayenu Circle: Marine Permaculture: Regenerating Marine Ecosystem Services at Scale, March 17, 7 - 8:30 pm
A special hybrid presentation that will change how you think about climate action. A presentation by Brian von Herzen, PhD Founder & Executive Director, Climate Foundation. Marine Permaculture works with the ocean's own biology: reconnecting seaweed to its supply of deep nutrients in spite of unprecedented ocean warming, regenerating kelp forests, reviving marine ecosystems, and sequestering carbon at scale. This is not sacrifice-based climate action. It creates abundance — food security, coastal livelihoods, thriving reefs, and cleaner air. The work has earned global recognition: XPRIZE Milestone for Carbon Removal, the Singapore Liveability Challenge, and features in Smithsonian Magazine and the documentary 2040. Farm Discovery At Live Earth: Mushroom Foraging, March 21, 10 Am - Noon
This is an immersive, hands-on introduction to mushroom foraging and forest ecology led by local expert, Starlynn Hartnek. This workshop emphasizes real-world identification skills, seasonal species recognition, and understanding the trees and habitats mushrooms associate with. Expert guides will also point out other seasonal wild foods encountered along the route, Participants will practice observation and identification skills in the field, compare edible species with toxic lookalikes, and use field guides to examine found specimens. Patagonia: Save The Waves Foundation, March 26, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Surfing means so much to Santa Cruz: it drives our local economy, shapes our community, and connects us to the Monterey Bay sanctuary, which is an incredibly biodiverse ecosystem. But what happens when these waves and the ecosystems that support them aren't protected? Join Save The Waves Coalition for an evening exploring the surf economy of Santa Cruz through a short film screening, followed by a live panel discussion and audience Q&A with local experts and community members. We will be introducing the California Surf Reserves Bill: new legislation aimed at protecting the surf breaks and coastal ecosystems that matter most to our community. UCSC Arboretum: Tips & Tricks for Photographing Birds – an informal workshop with Kevin Lohman, March 28, 9 – 11 am
Bring your camera and join award-winning wildlife photographer Kevin Lohman for an informal, “getting started” wildlife photography field workshop in the gardens. Designed for anyone with an interest in hummingbird photography, this relaxed session will cover practical tips for finding, observing, and photographing these fast-moving birds, along with guidance that applies to wildlife subjects more broadly. SC Museum Of Natural History: Nature Club - Extra-curricular program for 6th-8th graders, the Nature Club, March 28, April 25, May 16
Nature Club takes young explorers (6th-8th grade) into local habitats to learn about the amazing living world around us while making discoveries along the way. On Seasonal Saturday meetups we venture into local habitats — from rocky tide pools to forested trails — to uncover the biodiversity in our own backyard. We take middle schoolers out into local natural spaces to do various scientific studies and nature hikes. Learn MORE.
Coastal Watershed Council: State of the San Lorenzo River Symposium, April 11, 9 am - 1 pm
Please join us once again for the State of the San Lorenzo River Symposium. The event will kick off with opening remarks from Senator John Laird followed by talks about history, science and policy issues relevant to restoration of the watershed. We'll wrap up the event with a walking tour of the lower San Lorenzo River. Presented by SC Water Dept., San Lorenzo Valley Water District, Coastal Watershed Council and the Resource Conservation District of SC County. At the London Nelson Center. Right Livelihood UCSC: International Conference, April 13 - May 8
Around the world, Right Livelihood Laureates—recipients of the “Alternative Nobel Prize”—have demonstrated that courageous action and moral imagination can reshape societies. This spring, Laureates and educators from across the globe will gather with students, scholars, and community members to explore how education can strengthen democracy, deepen participation, and help build just futures. Homeless Garden Project: An Evening of Hope: A Film & Panel Discussion, April 15, 7 - 9 PM
Join HGP at the Del Mar Theater for an Evening of Hope, featuring a screening of the National Geographic's Jane Goodall documentary, The Hope, as well as an engaging panel discussion on aspects of hope. The film documents Dr. Goodall's time with family in Tanzania and the approaching 60th anniversary of her arrival to the chimpanzee kingdom in Gombe. Following the film, we'll hear from a broad section of community members and leaders, such as noted author Jonathan Franzen about the role of hope in their lives. Tickets ($18 donation that supports our work) are available on Eventbrite HERE, as well as at our Downtown Store (1338 Pacific Ave. - 11am - 6pm daily) where you can pick up tickets without the online Eventbrite fees.
Earth Day Tannery Arts Center, April 18, 9 am - 2 pm

UCSC Farm: Spring Plant Sale, April 25, 10 am - 3 pm
Stock your garden with premium organic seedlings while supporting student education! Browse a huge variety of flowers, vegetables, herbs, and strawberries—all grown by UCSC Farm staff, students, and volunteers in our greenhouses. Proceeds support the Center for Agroecology’s hands-on learning programs. Please plan to park across the street from the Hay Barn in parking lot 116. We encourage you to bring a basket, wagon, or other means to carry your plants. We will have a limited number of cardboard boxes available but encourage you to bring your own. At the Hay Barn. Youth For Environmental Action: Food Waste Action Festival, March 14, 1 - 3 pm
Join Youth for Environmental Action in a food waste festival for all! Did you know food waste has a major climate impact? By attending this event, you'll learn the skills to actively combat this impact. Come for festival games, a clothing swap*, and to hear from our student leaders. All are welcome! Cabrillo Horticulture: Home Gardener Days Saturday Program, Mar 14, May 9, 9:30 - 11:30 am
The free public lectures will occur in room 5005 for 30 minutes, followed by hands-on gardening skills taught in the Horticulture Department gardens. Tools and necessary gardening materials will be provided by Cabrillo College. Our goal is to provide the public a chance to experience the beauty of our campus and learn from our fabulous instructors. We provide free, research-based gardening education and the opportunity to practice new horticulture skills. Topic emphasis will be on responsible, water-wise, sustainable, and pollinator-friendly gardening. LINK.
The Coastal Watershed Council: RiverRow Grand Opening, March 12, 11am - 1 pm
We're thrilled to be taking part in the Grand Opening of RiverRow on Thursday, March 12. This event marks a historic moment for the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz. For the first time since the river levees were built seven decades ago, new buildings are connected directly to the river instead of facing away. This milestone is the result of years of advocacy from CWC urging Santa Cruz leaders to embrace the vital river at the heart of our city. At the ribbon cutting, CWC Executive Director Laurie Egan will highlight the significance of this moment for the San Lorenzo and what comes next. Bike SC County: Supermarket Street Sweep, March 8, 2 - 4 pm
The Supermarket Street Sweep is a bike race/scavenger hunt/fundraiser/truly epic day to gather food for Second Harvest Food Bank in Santa Cruz County. On March 8th, racers will meet at the lighthouse on West Cliff Drive, be given a manifest of grocery stores and food items to be bought at each store, and then race to collect all items the fastest, or collect the most food. The event will only be a couple hours long, come spend an afternoon riding bikes and helping others! Race alone, or bring some friends and team up to be the fastest or heaviest. More INFO

UCSC Science in the Neighborhood: Transforming Pacific salmon recovery, from genes to ecosystems, March 6, 6 pm
For millennia, Pacific salmon have been integral to the health of coastal ecosystems and human communities from California to Alaska. Salmon are ecological and cultural keystone species, connecting marine and freshwater food webs and supporting thriving fisheries. Professor Palkovacs, UCSC, will describe transformative approaches to recover wild salmon populations by connecting novel insights from the level of genes to ecosystems. Santa Cruz Permaculture: Online Introduction To Permaculture, March 5, April 2, May 7, Noon - 1 pm
1-Hour Online Session With Santa Cruz Permaculture Director, Dave Shaw. Are you permaculture curious? Maybe you’ve heard the term, but don’t quite get what it’s all about? Organic gardening or something? Is there more to it? And what’s unique about the Santa Cruz Permaculture approach? Permaculture design is a method of landscape planning that can be applied to anything, from a home garden or farm to a city block or entire village. Get all your permaculture questions answered in this 60-minute live session. We’ll discuss what permaculture is and isn’t and how it fits into the global approach to societal change. Seymour Marine Discovery Center: Younger Lagoon Reserve Tours, March 5, 19 & 28, 10:30 am - Noon
90 minute behind-the-scenes hiking tour of the Younger Lagoon Reserve led by experienced docents.
Younger Lagoon Reserve tours are offered on selected Thursdays and Saturdays of each month beginning at 10:30 AM. Younger Lagoon Reserve tours are free and open to the public. Advance reservations are highly recommended, but not required. Tours are best suited for children 10 years of age and older. Participants must be physically able to walk up and down steep inclines.
