Union Of Concerned Scientists: Support Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling in California

California is racing ahead on electric vehicles (EVs), which means more EV batteries are hitting the road—and more will soon reach the end of their lives. Every EV battery contains materials that are essential to our clean energy future. Without strong recycling policies, these batteries can be wasted, stockpiled, or dismantled in unsafe ways, putting workers and communities at risk. EV recycling works. Already, we can recover more than 90 percent of many critical minerals, such as cobalt, lithium, and manganese from EV batteries. Research by the Union of Concerned Scientists shows that by 2050, recycling could supply about half of the cobalt and nickel, and a quarter of the lithium, needed for EV batteries in the United States—but only if states put smart recycling systems in place.
