After the devastation of the 2020 CZU Fire, our community has worked tirelessly to make our homes and forests safer. Now, new statewide fire regulations could put that progress—and our wallets—at risk. The California Board of Forestry is finalizing new “Defensible Space Zones 0, 1, and 2” regulations that could require homeowners in rural areas to spend thousands of dollars on property changes with limited proven benefits. These costly measures would apply to everyone living within CAL FIRE’s CZU State Responsibility Area (SRA), regardless of risk level.
